New Saskatchewan Literary Award

Link http://www.skwriter.com/
We have had an exciting development tin the literary world of Saskatchewan. On May 3 the Saskatchewan Writers Guild and Cheryl and Henry Kloppenburg announced the launching of the Cheryl and Henry Kloppenburg Award for Literary Excellence. This new literary award will recognize Saskatchewan writers who have written a substantial body of literary work. The award will be made annually and is for the sum of ten thousand dollars, which makes it the largest such award in any province in Canada.

Each ward recipient will also receive a signed limited edition copy of a watercolour by renowned Saskatchewan artist Dorothy Knowles. Dorothy has gifted the original to the Guild.

Henry & Cheryl Kloppenburg are Saskatchewan folks, through and through. They are generous supporters of the arts, both nationally and provincially, and have supported writing and the SWG for almost 20 years through their gifts to the SWG’s Grain Magazine. Here they are, flanked by the Guild’s past-president, Bob Calder and me, next to the painting.

The great Canadian man of letters, the late Roberson Davies, admonished a cure-all of “massive daily doses of art, music and literature. On Saturday evening at his book launch Yann Martel was the latest of many authors to state that without reading one cannot be a writer. Both make the point that reading is a vital part of our culture, so this award is for those who have given us the chance to read and enjoy good writing.

Book awards, The Trouble With Lions

Another book nomination – Yeah!
The Trouble With Lions has been nominated as a finalist in the Alberta Book Publishing 2009 Awards in the category of Trade Non-Fiction. The awards will take place at a Gala evening in Edmonton on May 8th. There are three other books in this category, so once again, it’s fingers crossed.

When I asked David Leach of the University of Victoria, who manages the Canadian Non-Fiction Collective's very active and useful Listserv to make a brief announcement about this he asked how I had managed to get Jane Goodall to write the foreword. Jane and I chatted at Saskatoon's Hotel Bessborough on one her visits and inevitably found that with our years spent in East Africa, and on wild animal work, we had many friends in common. We also have a shared passion about conservation, and Jane was happy to oblige when I asked her to write the piece.

Book awards, The Trouble With Lions

Exciting news!
The Trouble With Lions A Glasgow Vet in Africa has been short-listed in two categories for the Saskatchewan Book Awards, of which you can read more here. This year there were 113 entries, which is a record and also an amazing stat when you think that the province has only just reached its peak population EVER of 1 million people. The official number on July 1, 2008 according to the Saskatchewan Bureau of Statistics was 1015985. That is a published author, in the 2007/2008 year alone, for every 8991.017699115044 people! I guess that on July 1st the stats people guessed that one woman somewhere in the province was just a teeny little bit pregnant.

Now for the wait. The actual awards do not get handed out until November 29th at a gala evening. Fingers crossed.
